The O antiphons

*Artwork by Maria G. De Lallo

The O antiphons are a series of ancient verses pertaining to the coming of Christ, addressing Him by various Old Testament titles. The Catholic Church recites them during vespers (evening prayers) from the 17th – 23rd of December in anticipation of Jesus’ birth on Christmas. They are profoundly beautiful.

The first, O Sapientia, is this in English:

O Wisdom, Which camest out of the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly: come and teach us the way of prudence.

This is a beautiful rendition if you’d like to listen to it.

We will be posting all of the antiphons here over the next week, as well as some Christmas short stories and poems.

Hope you’re all having a very good Advent so far!

God Bless,

Amy
